Portofino hiking at a glance
The headland behind Portofino is a regional nature park, and most walks start from the village, from San Rocco or from Nozarego. The classic day is the walk from Portofino to the abbey bay of San Fruttuoso, then a boat to Camogli. It is a real hike with a steep descent, not a flat promenade.
Two sections of the park network are closed: the Passo del Bacio and the Via dei Tubi stay closed in 2026. Do not use them to link Camogli and San Fruttuoso on foot.

Portofino to San Fruttuoso
The best known trail in the park.
The path begins at Piazza della Libertà and Via del Fondaco in Portofino and runs over the Costa della Pineta and the Prato to the junction called Base O. The route is 4.3 km, about 2 to 2 hours 15 minutes one way, with about 250 m up and 250 m down. It is grade E, which means medium hiking experience.
From Base O the trail drops in tight switchbacks to the bay. Plan 40 to 45 minutes for that part. A viewpoint with a chain handrail is a separate detour from the main path, so skip it if the surface is wet. Bring water, sturdy shoes and a hat in summer.
At the bottom you reach the abbey, which charges its own entry. See the San Fruttuoso guide for tickets and opening hours.

San Rocco to Punta Chiappa
A shorter walk to a rocky point.
The second trail starts at San Rocco and runs via San Nicolò and Porto Pidocchio to Punta Chiappa. It is 2.1 km long, drops about 220 m and is graded T, an easier class. The main marked route has stairs, so it does not suit wheelchairs or strollers. Punta Chiappa also has a boat stop on the Camogli line, which makes a walk down and a boat back possible.
Other park routes
There is also a route from Portofino Vetta via Pietre Strette and Base O to San Fruttuoso. The main entry points to the network are San Rocco, Nozarego and Portofino. Walking times on the Vetta variants differ, so ask at the start of a route or read the current park notices before you go.

Santa Margherita to Portofino on foot
A coastal walk with a road section.
Allow about 1 hour 20 minutes from Santa Margherita Ligure. The walk is not a traffic-free path throughout. Parts have sidewalks and boardwalks beside the road. Between Paraggi and Portofino a forest path runs above the road, about 30 minutes, marked with three red dots in a triangle. More on the town in the Santa Margherita Ligure guide.
If your legs give out, the 782 bus links Santa Margherita and Portofino. A single ticket costs €3.50 to €5 in 2026, depending on the ticket type.
Getting back by boat
Hike one way, ride the other.
| Boat leg (2026) | Adult one way | Adult return | Planned time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camogli to San Fruttuoso | €11 | €17 | About 30 minutes |
| Camogli to Punta Chiappa | €7 | €12 | About 15 minutes |
| Punta Chiappa to San Fruttuoso | €7 | €12 | – |
For most hikers a good plan is to walk down to San Fruttuoso in the morning and take a boat to Camogli in the afternoon. Boats can stop in bad sea weather, and the last departure changes by month, so check the current timetable on the day. Details are in the Camogli guide.
