Portofino weather in short

The monthly table below uses long-term averages for nearby Genoa, the city on the same coast. They show the pattern of the year, not a forecast. Summers are warm and fairly dry, autumn is the wettest season, and winter is mild but short on daylight and on boat service.

The seasons shape what you can do. Boats to San Fruttuoso run all year but with winter rest days, the castle has longer hours from April, and the coastal paths are most pleasant outside the hottest weeks. If you plan a boat day, see boat tours.

Best time to visit Portofino

There is no single best month. The right season depends on what you want to do.

  • Boats and the abbey: From mid-June to the first half of September the San Fruttuoso abbey is open from 10:00 to 17:45. In March and in October, November and December it closes at 15:45, and in winter it is closed on non-holiday Mondays. Bad sea weather stops the boats from Camogli, and then the abbey stays closed too.
  • Castello Brown: Hours run from 10:00 to 21:00 from June to 30 August, 10:00 to 19:00 in April, May and September, 10:00 to 18:00 in October and 10:00 to 16:00 in February, March, November and December. In January it opens at weekends only, from 10:30 to 17:30.
  • Walking: The paths in the nature park are easier in spring and autumn than in the heat of July and August. Autumn brings the most rain, so check the day's forecast before a steep descent. Read more on the hiking page.
  • Swimming: Summer is the warm season, but swimming is subject to rules in the marine protected area. See beaches near Portofino.
  • Quieter visits: Winter means shorter days and fewer boats. From November to December the Camogli boats do not run on Mondays or on 25 December, and there are fewer departures per day.
